This year:
1) white people bought up all the tiki torches in town. Specifically, a group of white moms in vans.
2) white people created a barrier between the cops and protestors.
3) a year ago, a white woman was run over by a white supremacist and murdered.
Heather Heyer’s family has been clear that the attention she received was due to her white skin. It was unbelievable that a young, white woman would die against a fight against the alt-right and Nazis. When she died, our president said ‘there are good people on both sides.’ Heather Heyer had posts on social media that stated ‘if you’re not angry you’re not paying attention.’
There are not enough whites paying attention, but on this weekend anniversary, I think it’s important to see there are whites who are. Too often the Black Community is doing work for years and isn’t recognized until a white person says the same thing, so I don’t want to minimize that fact. However, as a white person with a lot of white friends who think Trump isn’t racist, his presidency killed a white woman a year ago, and allowed Nazis to feel safe again. David Duke loves him.
Between now and November, I will be volunteering as much as I can with Democratic leadership to take back our country. Our country has a lot of flaws. A lot of issues. A lot of privilege. But we cannot let this continue.
